TriviaWorld (triviaworld.app) is a map quiz game. We collect as little as we can to run it, we never sell your information, and you can delete your account at any time. This page explains what we use and why. We follow the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Questions? Email prizes@triviaworld.app.
Playing without an account
You can play the daily round and quiz nights without signing up. We use one essential cookie to keep your game going (your session), and your browser remembers small preferences such as your chosen level. If you join a quiz night, the name you type is shown to the host and the other players.
If you create an account
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your display name and email address | To sign you in, show your name on leaderboards, groups and quiz nights, and email you password-reset links. |
| Your password | Stored only as a secure one-way hash: we can never see it. |
| Your games: scores, answers’ distances, streaks, badges, passport countries | To show your stats, history, collection and leaderboard places. |
| Groups and quizzes you start or join | So you and your friends can play together. |
| Your Pro plan, if you have one | To unlock Pro. Card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store them. |
| Sign-in attempts (email, IP address, time) | To protect accounts from password guessing. Kept for a short time only. |
Our lawful bases are providing the service you asked for (your account and games), our legitimate interest in keeping the game secure and working well, and your consent for analytics cookies.
Cookies
We set an essential session cookie so the game and sign-in work. With your permission only, Google Analytics sets cookies that tell us, anonymously, how people use TriviaWorld (which rounds are popular, where people stop). You choose when you first visit, and can change it at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
Who helps us run TriviaWorld
- Fasthosts (UK): hosts the website and its database.
- Upstash: runs the leaderboards (your display name and scores).
- Stripe: takes Pro payments (card details, billing email).
- Brevo: sends our emails, such as password resets.
- Google Analytics: anonymous usage statistics, only with your consent.
- Map, fonts and photos: the globe’s map images come from Esri and OpenFreeMap, fonts from Google Fonts, and question photos from Wikimedia Commons (through our own server). Your browser contacts these services to load them, which shares your IP address with them, as with any website.
Some of these companies may process information outside the UK; where they do, they use the safeguards UK law requires.
Shared result cards and quiz invites
When you share a result card, its picture (your score, accuracy and distances, never your name or email) is stored on our server for up to 60 days so the link can show it. Quiz-night invite pictures show the quiz’s name, date and prize.
How long we keep things
Your account and games are kept until you delete your account. Records of finished prize-league prizes are kept for our accounts, without your name once your account is deleted. Sign-in attempt records and old free-round records are cleared automatically.
Your rights
You can see your games and details on your account page, change your password there, and delete your account yourself at any time (Account → “Delete my account”). Deleting it removes your scores, streaks, passport, groups you started and quizzes you host, and takes you off the leaderboards; a paid Pro subscription is cancelled straight away. You can also ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, or to stop using it, by emailing prizes@triviaworld.app. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
TriviaWorld is family-friendly, and anyone can play without an account. If you’re under 13, please ask a parent or guardian before creating an account.
Changes
If we change how we use your information, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
